Sunny1600 says hi from the Netherlands
Hi guys,
my name is Mark, 29 years old and I live in the Netherlands. I met some of you guys at last years JAE of which I still remember (and stay in touch with) Dan with the PS13. I also own a white silvia, later more about the car.
i have attended JAE the last 3 years, which is quite a trip from the Netherlands. However every time I make new friends, see cars I have never seen or heard about and drink alot of beers (or bjeej as me and my mates call it).
Besides cars and JAE I also like to take the car out on a date to the Nordschleife, also known as Jacky Stewarts nickname the Green Hell.
My previous car was a nissan sunny 1.6 with GA16DS, hence the nickname sunny1600.
I stripped the car late 2010 and started my search for a better replacement. Which turned out to be a white nissan silvia....
About the car. It is a Nissan silvia S12 Grand Prix sporting the FJ20E engine. I bought it February last year after an epic car collection road trip.
The car was for sale near the Czech border in the little place called Stützengrun.
First sight. Instant crush again
I have driven the GP on the Nordschleife only one time last year. Did 11 laps that day and it felt great. I have had a nissan sunny N14 before that I used to drive on the Nordschleife too. But I like the S12 better..
Previous car, my sunny chalkboardpaint blue.
The S12 GP on track
Why only 11 laps? Because I blew the engine. I had a coolant leak because a hose snapped on the freeway which resulted in a cracked head so had to be rebuilt. That had been done and it turned out that they fucked up my head, they cut the valve stems.
I didnt know the sh*t about the cut valve stems when I met some of you guys last year JAE, I thought it was still an easy fix at that time. Sh*t happens....
So I was totally fed up with the 12 and went on holiday in the States. Met some guys there from the 12 community (Draconis, the guys from LowXIIposition) and had a blast.
In the meantime found myself a fresh FJ20E in Germany so collected. Swapped it in recently and then the starter that died. Replaced the starter and now I am driving the 12 again.
But as with silvia's, this problem was solved. Another occurred. The ring gear which the starter swings is damaged, needs replacement. Also the gearbox needs revision as it has some strange vibrations/noices. Luckily for me I still have two other FJ20's in storage so need to take one off them and use that flywheel with ring gear. One last problem, it looks like the engine eats up oil. So I just bought shares of Shell
Seriously though, just checking it and if it gets too worse have it rebuilt.
I did one lap on the Nordschleife this year, however it was only open for an hour or so and it got closed before ending time due to oil leakage. It was way to crowded anyway to drive it normally.
I am planning to come to the ring on sunday the 27th of May and meet up with Dan and do some laps off course.
Other plans for 2012 are below, but of course I am going to JAE and first time to Japfest 2 Donnington Park.
Plans for 2012
Going for some tracktime at
- Zandvoort (Netherlands)
- Nordschleife (Germany) Whenever possible
- Donnington Park (UK) Japfest 2 (tracktime bought 4 sessions)
Here are some links
Couldnt post the links.

The Flying Dutchman - The S12 Grand Prix

Each car has its own personality and much of that is apparent in the way it presents itself. One can say that a car is simply that. An inanimate object that is void of personality and if anything, is just an extension of ourselves as we express our interests, tastes, and aspirations through them. This is very true; however, if one does look or listen closely, one can indeed pick up on just what the car is beyond a collection of metal, plastic, and glass. And indeed, it is this that makes cars come unto their own. To add, there is the interplay between the owner of the car and the car itself that truly brings out the best in both and it is this trait that propels the two in such a manner that it is nearly impossible to not notice and admire.
As our newest addition to our Featured Car list, Mark van der Velden and his Grand Prix are very much an example of how a car and driver can propel the other to beyond that of just "owning" a car. After spending a week getting to know the Grand Prix and seeing all that Mark has in store for her, the two are indeed a powerhouse waiting to happen. We here at S12Silvia.com have long since had our eye on Mark and his Grand Prix but have been waiting for some time to see how things would turn out for the two and just what direction they would be going. With several world renowned tracks already driven, an icon in Europe, and the inspiration of many globally,
It is indeed our privilege to have the opportunity to add Mark and his Grand Prix to the list. We are excited to share what Mark has already prepared for us and the many things yet to come. With so much in the works already, be on the lookout for some great features about one of the finest examples of an S12 Grand Prix that still exist.
