The Super Supra Project Empty The Super Supra Project

Post by retrogaz Mon Jun 11, 2012 5:18 pm

Hi all, I thought I'd kick off my supra build thread today, my ultimate aim is to turn this beast into a serious drift weapon. This post is an accumulation of the last few weeks since I bought her.

The Super Supra Project Trans5
The Super Supra Project Car01
The Super Supra Project Engine01

Most of you will already recognise this car, which belonged to Martyn who kindly sold me the car, and I'm happy to say i'm not regretting it just yet! There is a flip-load of work that needs doing, and a hefty amount of cash that needs throwing into it before it will even start, but alas this is one of my favourite cars of all time so I don't really care about the value, as I most likely will keep and run her until she dies.

Essential parts that I am focusing on atm to get her up and running are:

Wiring
New Turbo: Going to go straight down the upgrade route and pickup a Holset HX35
Radiator and FMIC: Race Rad most likely being ordered next month. FMIC will be dependant on the manifold as I'm thinking of going with a ffim.
Custom Exhaust: 3" as straight through as possible, with a 3" v-band flanged downpipe which will allow me to angle the dp away from the steering rack.
Silicone hoses: Pretty straight forward... replace all the shitty rubber with silicone!
AFM: Purchased, just need a decent intake pipe and filter.
MSD Tach adapter: I don't know why I need it, I just know I need it lol! something to do with the speedo instruments not working properly without it...

I've budgeted for a whole load more parts, but really, I just want it up and running to start with, I do need a few other small parts such as viscous fan + fan clutch and will be looking to plumb in a oil filter relocation kit before everything gets in my way. I also have a diff rebuild kit and new crush sleeve coming next month, not needed right now, but as part of a group buy, i thought I might aswell take advantage as it's coming from Australia.

On with the build -

The basic plan so far is: strip poo out, clean down the engine as best I can without having to drop it back out. I have a parts list as long as my arm - I ain't even kidding either, my other half nearly had a heart attack when she saw the total cost...

ok, so I started with assessing what needed buying, and getting to grips with everything on the engine, and what went where. I'm quite the novice when it comes to mechanics, but I'm confident that if I read enough into it, I can get most of the work done myself, and learn quite a bit in the process.

First thing I did was pull the alternator out, along with the intake pipe (3000 pipe), dug out my trusty wire brushes and sat for a couple hours getting them back to a decent colour.

Alternator Before...

Alternator After!
The Super Supra Project Alt_after01

Also managed to get a seriously mega bargain on a much needed AFM, which cost me all of £8.01 on ebay, and it also came with the cone adapter! Laughing I was expecting to pay quite a bit more, considering toyota main dealers list price for this is a whopping £750+ which is absolutely ridiculous!!!!!
The Super Supra Project Afm_a

It was looking a bit tatty, but i managed to clean it down a fair bit, and will be hitting most of these parts with a degreaser when i get round to buying some!

As the interior was smelling a bit musty, I decided to strip it all out and give it a clean through, so out came the seats, and everything in the boot, the seats got a good wash and i went through the car with a bucket of soapy water and a cloth, then got in the front and hoovered down the carpets and wiped over the dash. On my cleaning mission I found nearly 9 quid, which I was very pleased about lol (Thanks Martyn Wink) So she's smelling much better now, and seats don't feel so grubby any more.

The next day, I decided it was time to tackle the engine loom, and get it pulled through the firewall, reading up on a few conversions, they've all said this was an absolute bitch, and needs 2 pairs of hands and atleast 30 minutes... hahahaha, well a little help from a roll of cello-tape and a good eye for tight holes, and I had it pulled through within 5 minutes. Wink

Moving on... This week, I havn't been able to touch the Supra, due to my neighbours being absolute dickheads. Last week I was sat in the car disassembling the dash to make the wiring conversion easier for my electrician mate when he came round, suddenly my grumpy old neighbour appears and starts ranting and swearing at me, telling me that I can't work on the car on my drive! So I told him to politely piss off at which point he rung my landlord.... Long story short, my neighbours built the house I live in and sold it to my current landlord, the contract that was drawn up has a clause in saying no mechanical work will be carried out on the drive... so I'm pretty much screwed.

So now I'm waiting for a friend to empty his unit, so I can move the Supra down there, It will be nice to get the Supra into the dry anyway, so it's kind of a blessing in disguise as I only have a waterproof cover to keep off the elements and the seagull crap.

I'll hopefully hear something on this by the end of the month, so updates will continue then! sunny

In the meantime, It'd be nice to get some feedback from you guys, if anyone knows of a mk3 breaking for spares, I'd be very grateful. Primarily I need the viscous fan and fan clutch. Actually, thinking about it, maybe you have this still Martyn?

Thanks guys, hope you enjoyed the read, will update when I have something to share!

Looking good why don't you bin the viscous fan and get an electric fan with the race radiator. Much neater and simpler IMO. Your Neibours are cocks I vote for a group car build down the whole street to piss them off

At this present time, I won't be touching the bodywork, John. It's too much to even think about right now lol.

I have thought about going with electric fans on the rad, but I'm clueless to how it all plumbs in so that it comes on automatically. I've also read that it can cripple the alternator, though I'm not sure how legitimate that is.

and yes my neighbours are absolute noob cocks, to say the least, I'm half tempted to whack 6 months tax on and stick it on the kerb outside his front door.

I've sorted a decent size garage with electrics and water which I'll be moving the supra into next week when I get the keys.

I've ordered the new silicone hose kit and just waiting for some cash to free up so I can get the turbo kit ordered. I've decided to go with a T4 turbo as the kit comes with modified top mount mani and downpipe, will most likely get the fmic ordered at the same time.

My neighbour got his come upance the other day, left the door open on his jeep and a truck took it clean off! That's what you get for being a prick haha. Naturally I stood and laughed my flipping arse off.

Will let you guys know when I get the keys and things should start progressing again!

ok ok, so maybe not this year haha Embarassed

sorry I haven't updated in a while guys, haven't done that much due to having to spend out on other poo over the last few months and Christmas.

The Supra is now garaged, in a small lockup that I had to make do with because the other guy let me down after weeks of promising. I won't bore you guys with a wall of text, so here's a brief update on how it's progressing since I last posted....

Here she is snuggled into her new home:

The Super Supra Project Frontend_02

Bought the new silicone hose pipes, radiator, oil cooler and relocation kit. I decided the HG needed doing as there was water in the sparkplug wells, so pulled off the head and found it wasn't touched, but might aswell go through with it anyway.

So the head went off for a skim, I've reseated all 24 valves and the head is ready to go back on.

I've ordered ARP head studs, an engine gasket set, and cometic metal head gasket to go back on, this lot will be arriving in January. I've also rebuilt the diff with new clutch plates and a stronger pinion spacer, so diff should lock like you wouldn't believe now.

Also got hold of a used turbo, good condition and pretty solid, no play at all, and it came with the elbow. New steering wheel is bolted in place too, after sourcing the short boss (65mm Very Happy ) from overseas.

In all fairness, I've shelled out a fair whack on tools, which has cut deep into my budget, but at least I now have everything I need.

I'm ordering a few bits from driftmotion next payday which will include new timing belt and pulleys and I've ordered a new water pump this morning.

Thanks Lewis, fingers crossed it should turn out to be pretty darn reliable. I'm not touching the bottom end for the time being, as I'll end up spending a fortune and then some!
